In 2018, Hornady introduced the 6.5 PRC, or Precision Rifle Cartridge, as big brother to the 6.5 Creedmoor. The 6.5 PRC is based on the little known .300 Ruger Compact Magnum, necked down to accommodate 6.5mm bullets. Examine a PRC round and you’ll notice how short and fat the case is, and how far the bullet protrudes from the brass. By design, the distance from primer to the cartridge’s front edge (right at 2 inches) is shortened to ensure proper seating of a long, high ballistic-coefficient bullet in a short-action bolt magazine. How Many Whitetail Bucks Do Hunters Kill Across America?

According to the National Deer Association’s 2023 Deer Report hunters in the Northeast, Southeast and Midwest regions combined killed a total of 2,969,596 whitetail bucks during the 2021-22 season. That’s the fourth highest buck kill in America over the past 10 seasons. An impressive 40% of those bucks harvested across the nation were 3½ years of age or older. Hunters in the Southeast shoot the most mature deer; 84% of the bucks tagged in Dixie in 2021-22 were 2½ years or older. Top 5 states for total buck harvest: Texas (447,972 bucks); Michigan (223,476); Wisconsin (153,112); Pennsylvania (145,320); Missouri (143,815).

Right now we're in the middle of a 3-week road trip filming for Season 12 of Big Deer TV on Sportsman Channel. I wanted to share a few photos with this update: I kicked things off in northwestern Oklahoma by shooting this beautiful 10-pointer (4.5 years old) with thick antler bases. He was pushing does all over the place and I finally stopped him with a loud eck and killed him with one 150-grain Hornady SST bullet. Rifle is the great new CZ model 600, mine in old-school .30-06, topped with the great Trijicon Huron 3X-9X by 40mm scope.
