Jones, 86, reached and surpassed a milestone this season by bagging the 400th and 401st turkeys of his career. The reason he got off to such a slow start was because he lived in far north Alabama where turkeys were scarce for most of his life. “We really didn’t have any turkeys north of Birmingham when I was a young boy,” Jones said. “They had all been killed during the Depression. If it’s brown it’s down! A lot of us started out deer hunting that way decades ago, but those days are finally over. According to the National Deer Association’s 2021 Whitetail Report, hunters killed more mature bucks in the 2019-20 season than ever reported. Out of a harvest of 2.9 million bucks, a record 39% of those animals were estimated to be 3½ years of age or older. “Hunters now shoot far more bucks that are at least 3½ years old than 1½ years,” said Kip Adams, NDA’s Chief Conservation Officer. “That’s a monumental shift in attitude from two decades ago. “Hunters are clearly reaping the benefits of more naturally balanced age structure in herds across the whitetail’s range.” Interestingly, [...]

Back in September of 2020, as we were all locked down and trying to figure out what the hell the world was coming to, I blogged that with the border closed and no Americans going to Canada and spending $5,000-plus apiece to hunt for a big deer (closer to 8 Grand once you figure in airfare, incidentals, taxidermy, etc.) there would be a lot of pain in the outfitting business. But for the Canadian guides who could hang on and stay in business, this would lead to some spectacular opportunities in 2021, 2022 and beyond. BREAKING: Minnesota Researchers Develop New Field Test For CWD

University of Minnesota researchers have discovered the first-ever way to field test deer for CWD, a potential game changer in the ongoing fight against the deer disease. The new test is cheaper than lab examinations currently in use to check for CWD, and more importantly, it uses field-deployable equipment to test tissue samples from deer and provide preliminary positive or negative results in 24 hours. Imagine this: Shoot a deer, drive to a test site and drop off a tissue sample. The same day or the next day you get a text saying if your deer tested positive (discard it) or negative (eat the meat) for CWD. Have you gotten your 2020 shoulder mount back yet? I doubt it. Recently I took a social media poll of fervent deer hunters and asked them how long on average it takes to get a buck back from their taxidermist. I got hundreds of great responses, split down the middle: 49% of people said 8 or 9 months, and 51% said 10 months to a year. There were some outliers. A few people said they got their mounts back 2 to 4 months after they killed those deer. Those were early bow kills.
