I have been getting many inquiries about the future of Remington and I’ll keep you posted best I can.—M.H.   In July 2020, Remington filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, and since then the company has been looking to sell off its various brands, including Remington firearms, Marlin and Barnes Bullets. The Wall Street Journal reports: Firearms maker Remington Outdoor Co. has agreed to sell its ammunition business out of bankruptcy to South Carolina-based investment firm JJE Capital Holdings LLC for $65 million plus the assumption of liabilities, subject to better offers. The JJE offer came in the form of a stalking-horse bid, setting a floor on the sale price for Remington’s ammunition business, which the company has been marketing while in [...]

Is It Poison Ivy or Poison Oak?

2020-09-02T14:49:11-04:00September 2nd, 2020|Big Deer TV, Bowhunting, Deer Hunting|2 Comments

Indigo Urgent Care reports an estimated 85% of Americans, many of them hunters, fishers and hikers like us, are allergic to poison ivy and/or oak. You know a bad case of the rash can put a damper on summertime, but don’t let your guard down in the fall. I’m one of the 85%, and the worst case of poison ivy I ever got was during bow season one October. My climbing stand cut a vine that I stupidly did not see as I worked my way up a tree. Bits of vine hairs and bark and sap slid down my neck and around the sides of my head. My head swelled and a horrendous bubble of blisters broke out around [...]

Oregon: Elk Kills Bowhunter

2020-09-01T10:12:47-04:00September 1st, 2020|BigDeer|4 Comments

Oregon’s KATU reports that on Saturday a 66-year-old bowhunter shot a bull elk, but could not find it before dark. When he returned the next morning, the wounded animal charged and killed him, apparently by impaling an antler in his neck. This tragic news got me to thinking about something I have written and blogged about several times over the years: A “dead” deer can kill you, so be careful every time you walk up on a buck (or elk or any animal) you just shot. Every time I blog that, some tough guy sends me a snide comment of how ridiculous that sounds, and what a wuss I must be. Well, don’t blow it off. This is admittedly rare, [...]

5 Tips for Fall Deer Food Plots

2020-08-28T14:17:57-04:00August 28th, 2020|Big Deer TV, BigDeer, Deer Hunting, Deer Management, whitetail deer|1 Comment

As you read this it is time to plant a few cool-season food plots on your land. While these ½- to 2-acre green strips and patches provide deer with some nutrition for a short time, they are designed mainly to pull the animals out of cover and into shooting range and ultimately into your freezer. Note: If that sounds like baiting, it is indeed a controversy that pops up from time to time. I don’t see fall plots as baiting at all, but some people do. NO states consider food plots as bait—planted food plots are legal everywhere—so that is all matters. You might or might not kill a buck in or near one of the plots, but you will [...]
