Wildlife officials in Tennessee note that hunters flocked to the turkey woods in big numbers this past spring when life as we knew it shut down due to the pandemic, which left people out of work and looking for something to do. Fishermen followed suit and converged on Tennessee lakes and rivers this summer, too. The number of people in the state who purchased hunting and fishing licenses has risen by nearly 20 percent so far this year as compared to 2019. With the pandemic lingering into late summer and fall, TWRA officials believe a similar scenario could play out when deer seasons open. "The pandemic is still going on and we imagine people still have a lot of free time [...]

Are Most Deer Poachers Also Drug Dealers?

Working a tip one time, Kentucky wildlife officers went to a guy’s house and arrested him on suspicion of illegally killing of 48 deer. 48! While there, the officers also discovered marijuana plants, indoor grow lights, a cloning system, 16 bags of processed weed, more than 100 pills in plastic bags, 19 firearms and some cash. A Conservation Officer said at the time, “As for those who do this, most of them don’t have jobs and the biggest percentage are also into drugs.” Why anybody would poach 48 deer is beyond me, but that's another story. Most troubling here is, “the biggest percentage (of poachers) are also into drugs.” That is a really broad statement, and I wonder if it [...]

Associated Press: While the COVID-19 crisis has created untold hardships for people, it’s been a boon for wildlife. Animals appear to be taking advantage of quieter streets and less industry to explore new areas. Hard data will eventually be available, as naturalists will no doubt study the effect of the pandemic for some time. But for now, people who work with wildlife say they’re convinced reduced human interaction is benefiting animals. Most obvious, with most of us stuck at home, there is far less traffic on the roads. Far fewer squirrels, opossums, rabbits and other small mammals are getting run over. If you live in a wooded area, you’ve noticed that squirrels are everywhere! As for America’s number one game [...]

When this pandemic resides and the stay-at-home orders are finally relaxed, we all look forward to 2 things: getting back to work, and going deer hunting this fall. In the wake of COVID-19, having seen and endured great disruptions to our supply chains and food supply, and facing the reality that we could be locked down again in the future, I believe that more Americans than ever will hunt whitetails come October and November. Most will hunt within 30 miles of their homes, hoping to shoot one or more deer (up to the legal limit) for the freezer. Whether you are a seasoned veteran or a newbie, you should strive to hunt your best this season, not only for the [...]
